This booklet has included all the pharmaceutical extension data from 1988 when Japan first established extention provisions. You can find more than 350 pharmaceutical active ingredients, 600 patents, in total 1,000 extended pharmaceutical applications.

Japan allows multiple patent extensions for one single pharmaceutical active ingredient as long as there is a necessity of obtaining an approval by provisions in laws (MHLW, equivalent as FDA). One product can be protected by general product patent, specific product patent, use patent, process patent, and/or formulation patent. Yet, if any new use application is approved by the authority, patent rights can be extended.

Looking at above chart, the original patent of Leuprolide acetate should have expired on Sep. 29, 1993, or on June 10, 1996 for it's product patent. They have been extended for 5 years to Sep. 29, 1998, and June 10, 2001. The last patent will expire on Jan. 31, 2011. Currently, it is applying for extension. If it is approved, it can be extended to May 17, 2014.
